An hour later I was enjoying my fourth cup of coffee as I shared the story of my surprise visit from O’Neill with Devante and Amanda. The doorbell rang again.

The limo was back in the driveway, and a Beemer was parked in front of it. But instead of Tim O’Neill on my porch, this time there were two limo drivers, one who resembled a mob hitman, the other an accountant.

“Sorry to bother you, sir,” the hitman said. “Mr. O’Neill thought you might need a car of your own until you replace yours, so he wanted you to borrow this car from our pool.” The accountant handed me the keys.

“It’s got a full tank of gas,” he said.

My first impulse was to say no thanks, but I stifled that response. It was a fine-looking car, and it would take at least a couple weeks to settle with the insurance company and replace the Chrysler. Rental fees, even for a kiddie car, would cost at least a grand—money I didn’t have. And I couldn’t use a rental for Uber, so I would have no supplemental income.

“Thank you,” I said. “And please thank Mr. O’Neill. Much appreciated.”

The limo driver tipped his hat and smiled. Sort of. “Have a good day, Mr. Doyle.”

Devante had been lurking in the hallway, eavesdropping. “Damn. A BMW. We can drive in style now.”

“I don’t think O’Neill’s generosity includes you driving his car. Your track record’s not so good.”

Devante grinned. “That’s okay. I’ll sit in the back and you can drive me around. You need to get one of those little chauffeur beanies.”
